How could Barnabas sell a field (Acts 2:36-37)? He was a Levite, and I thought Levites couldn’t own land.
The Levites owned no tribal land. The Lord was their portion (inheritance), as seen in Deut 12:12; 14:29; Josh 14:3, 4; 18:7. But there was still some real estate allocated to them by other tribes (Josh 21:1-41; Lev 25:32).
In the first century, Josephus tells us, Levites still own land (Jos. Life 1.1-5; 14-15). Possibly Barnabas’ land was ancestral land in Cyprus. At any rate, the point is that Levites had no tribal allocation. In biblical times they did have cities (Num 35:1-5), as well as personal property.
